Experimental investigation of SO 2 uptake in snow
نویسندگان
چکیده
We conducted a series of bench-top experiments to examine accumulation of acidity in temperate snowpacks due to the deposition of SO 2 . To achieve this, SO 2 at concentrations of 45}85 ppbv was allowed to di!use into containers of snow at 03C for varying lengths of time, from 6 to 46 h. Depth pro"les of dissolved total sulfur (S(IV)#S(VI)) in the snow were measured and modeled with a coupled di!usion and chemical reaction transport model. Measured deposition velocities decreased from 0.06 to 0.03 cm s~1 for increasing exposure times of 6 to 46 h. Simulations matched measured total sulfur depth pro"les for liquid}water mass fractions in the snow of 0.07 for 6 h, increasing to 0.15 for 46 h of exposure. Multi-parametric sensitivity analysis indicates that deposition velocity is extremely sensitive to liquid water mass fraction. Modeling also shows that the decrease in deposition velocity with exposure time can be attributed to reduced solubility of SO 2 as the pH in the liquid water mass fraction decreased. These results suggest that clean snow is the most e!ective scavenger of SO 2 . ( 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Investigation of snow cover changes affected by climate change In North West of Iran
In this study in order to monitor snow cover, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) optical images were used, while for detection of snow covered areas, the snow index-NDSI, was applied. The results showed - according to the climatic conditions of the region- during the following months: December, January, February and March, most of the area is covered by snow and the max...
متن کاملAn investigation on the feasibility of applying MODIS snow cover products in cloudy weather by the employment of its integration with microwave images
Variation of snow cover area (SCA) in small to large scale catchment can be studied using MODIS snow products on daily to montly time step since the year 2000. However, one of the major problems in applying the MODIS snow products is cloud obscuration which limits the utilization of these products. In the current study, variation of SCA was investigated in Karoun basin, western part of Iran, us...
متن کاملExperimental Investigation and Modeling of Carbon Dioxide Adsorption from Model Flue gas
In this work, the adsorption of carbon dioxide from model flue gas on different adsorbents has been investigated. Using simplified modeling, parameters such as the total mass transfer coefficient and the effective diffusivity have been determined. Experiments were carried out in two sections: firstly, adsorption of pure carbon dioxide on different adsorbents was measured at pressures ranging fr...
متن کاملIncreased nitrogen leaching following soil freezing is due to decreased root uptake in a northern hardwood forest.
The depth and duration of snow pack is declining in the northeastern United States as a result of warming air temperatures. Since snow insulates soil, a decreased snow pack can increase the frequency of soil freezing, which has been shown to have important biogeochemical implications. One of the most notable effects of soil freezing is increased inorganic nitrogen losses from soil during the fo...
متن کاملExperimental and numerical investigation of the sintering rate of snow
Sintering rates in snow were investigated by measuring changes in penetration resistance with time and by using a numerical snow metamorphism model. Periodic Snow Micro Penetrometer (SMP) measurements were performed on uniform snow samples covering a wide range of densities. The mean penetration resistance of snow increased with time according to a power law with an average exponent of 0.18. Si...
